Get lifted at this theatrical dance event on Saturday! This weekend, the Carver Community Cultural Center presents Lifted, a performance by Rennie Harris and his Puremovement troupe. Check it out on April 13th beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Loosely based on the story of Oliver Twist, Lifted is premised on the narrative of a band of B-Boys (thieves/pickpockets). The local community attempts to avoid this band of thieves by casting them aside and labeling them as bad people with no hope of redemption. This presentation addresses disappointment, the pain of revenge and forgiveness.
Harris’ Lifted features a live choir in addition to the stunning dancers of Puremovement. This highly theatrical, narrative work merges the spiritual vocals of gospel with the powerful rhythms of house music and dance to explore contemporary issues of morality and spirituality.
Rennie Harris and his company, Rennie Harris Puremovement, are known internationally for creating a cohesive dance style that finds a forceful voice in theater. Considered the pioneer of “Street Dance” Theater, at the turn of the century alongside Princess Grace Kelly and Dr. Julius Erving, Harris was voted one of the most influential people in the last one hundred years of Philadelphia history. Harris also toured the Middle East as one of four Ambassadors for the United States as part of President Obama’s cultural exchange program Dance Motion USA.
“The Basquiat of the U.S. contemporary dance scene, Lorenzo Rennie Harris has literally embodied the history of hip-hop dance.” – London Times
